In May 2023, a new ticket for unlimited travel on all local public transport was introduced in Germany: the Deutschlandticket (Germany ticket). For a monthly price of initially 49 Euros, suddenly all the parts of the country connected to the local transport network were accessible. The introduction of the Deutschlandticket provided all the parameters for a photographic project. It defined both a location and a subject: Germany. It established a time frame: From the introduction of the ticket until its possible discontinuation — or, put differently: now. And it specified a means of transportation: local public transport — regional trains, busses, trams, metros, sometimes ferries. In short: Germany, now, by local public transport.
I have since taken many trips with the Deutschlandticket and have so far visited more than ninety cities, towns, and villages all over Germany, many of them for the first time, covering as much ground as possible while trying to photographically make sense of the country in its current state. Since I have started the project, the coalition government that introduced the ticket has had to dissolve; the influence of right-wing extremism on the German political landscape is ever-increasing; the threat of fascism is real; there are multiple crises, and, at the same time, there is a lot of business-as-usual and maintaining the status quo. Some traditions are still pursued as they have been for decades. In some places, Germany still looks like it did when I was a child; other places are nothing like they used to be. As always, there is people going about their lives, there is the banal and the absurd, and sometimes the unexpected. And there are of course also moments of solidarity, resilience and hope.

At the moment, however, the focus is on trying to document, as comprehensively as possible, Germany in all its complexity – now, by local public transport.

Im Mai 2023 wurde in Deutschland ein neues Ticket für unbegrenzte Fahrten im gesamten öffentlichen Nahverkehr eingeführt: das Deutschlandticket. Für einen monatlichen Preis von zunächst 49 Euro waren plötzlich alle an den Nahverkehr angebundenen Teile des Landes erreichbar. Die Einführung des Deutschlandtickets lieferte sämtliche Parameter für ein fotografisches Projekt. Sie definierte sowohl einen Ort als auch ein Thema: Deutschland. Sie setzte einen zeitlichen Rahmen: von der Einführung des Tickets bis zu seiner möglichen Abschaffung – oder anders gesagt: jetzt. Und sie legte ein Verkehrsmittel fest: den öffentlichen Nahverkehr – Regionalzüge, Busse, Straßenbahnen, U-Bahnen, S-Bahnen, manchmal Fähren. Kurz gesagt: Deutschland, jetzt, mit dem öffentlichen Nahverkehr. Seitdem habe ich viele Reisen mit dem Deutschlandticket unternommen und bislang mehr als neunzig Großstädte, Kleinstädte und Dörfer in ganz Deutschland besucht, viele davon zum ersten Mal. Dabei habe ich versucht, möglichst viel Strecke zu machen und fotografisch einen Zugang zu Deutschland in seinem gegenwärtigen Zustand zu finden. Seit Beginn des Projekts hat sich die Koalitionsregierung, die das Ticket eingeführt hatte, aufgelöst; der Einfluss des Rechtsextremismus auf die deutsche politische Landschaft nimmt stetig zu; die Gefahr des Faschismus ist real; es gibt zahlreiche Krisen – und gleichzeitig viel Alltag und das Festhalten am Status quo. Manche Traditionen werden noch immer so gepflegt wie seit Jahrzehnten. An einigen Orten sieht Deutschland noch so aus wie in meiner Kindheit; andere Orte haben sich vollkommen verändert. Wie immer gibt es Menschen, die ihrem Alltag nachgehen, es gibt das Banale und das Absurde und manchmal auch das Unerwartete. Und natürlich gibt es auch Momente der Solidarität, der Resilienz und der Hoffnung. Deutschlandticket ist ein fortlaufendes Projekt. Es gibt noch viel zu entdecken und viele offene Fragen – nicht zuletzt die Frage, welches Bild von Deutschland sich aus diesen Bildern von Deutschland konstruieren lässt. Im Moment liegt der Fokus jedoch darauf, Deutschland in all seiner Komplexität möglichst umfassend zu dokumentieren – jetzt, mit dem öffentlichen Nahverkehr.
