One day during a visit to Los Angeles in March 2023, I accidentally walked onto a street dressed as a film set. After walking around for a while and taking pictures, I learned that the film that was about to be shot was the Joker sequel. The city I was walking through was thus, simultaneously, Los Angeles, Gotham and New York City. The time was not only 2023, but also 1983, the year the movie is set in. The people out in the streets were in part extras already in costume and in part passers-by going about their business, and I wasn’t always able to tell who belonged in which category – just as I couldn’t always tell which parts were added to the architecture to make it look like another place or another time. I shot more than a hundred pictures before they started ushering people away.
Während eines Aufenthalts in Los Angeles im März 2023 geriet ich zufällig in eine Straße, die als Filmset dekoriert war. Nachdem ich eine Weile herumgelaufen war und fotografiert hatte, erfuhr ich, dass dort gleich eine Szene für das „Joker“-Sequel gedreht werden sollte. Die Stadt, durch die ich lief, war also gleichzeitig Los Angeles, Gotham und New York City. Die Zeit war nicht nur 2023, sondern zugleich auch 1983, das Jahr, in dem der Film spielt. Die Menschen auf den Straßen waren teils bereits kostümierte Statist*innen, teils Passant*innen, die ihrem Alltag nachgingen, und ich konnte nicht immer auseinanderhalten, wer zu welcher Kategorie gehörte – genauso wenig wie ich immer klar erkennen konnte, welche Teile der Architektur hinzugefügt worden waren, um den Ort wie eine andere Stadt oder eine andere Zeit wirken zu lassen. Nachdem eine Weile herumgelaufen war und etwa 100 Fotos gemacht hatte, wurden die Schaulustigen aufgefordert, den Drehort zu verlassen.
